Heritage Of
Shields Fleet One
Commissioned by Cornelius “Corny” Shields in the 1960’s, The Shields class, a Sparkman & Stephens design, is a 30-foot keelboat, intended for competitive one-design racing and fleet instruction.
Shields Fleet #1 continues this tradition and is one of the most active Shields fleets in the country, and the most active one-design fleet in western Long Island Sound.
With over 15 Shields at the Larchmont Yacht Club, the racing season begins Memorial Day weekend and continues through Columbus Day weekend. Most races are on Saturdays with the occasional two-day Saturday/Sunday regatta sprinkled throughout the season.
The warning gun for the first start on Saturdays is not until 2:25pm facilitating family time and other activities in the morning.
We host Friday night casual sailing, meeting at 5pm at the flagpole at LYC, welcoming newcomers to the fleet.
While we have strong and close competition, all are welcome to join.
If interested in getting involved in the fleet as crew or as a potential new owner, please contact the fleet captain.
